Malcolm Doran at Kracke Gallery

Master artist Malcolm Doran’s recently opened exhibition, “Allow Me”, will be held at the Kracke Fine Art Gallery in Rancho Mirage through January 27th, 2013. The show will feature sixteen of Doran’s signature female portraits including premieres of his newest works, “Purple Rain” and “Sofia”.

“It has certainly been fun working with 16 such precocious women,” comments Gallery owner Daniel Phelan. “They each have their own individual style yet all possess a common thread; like sisters from the same family.”

An artist’s reception will be held at the gallery on Saturday, January 12th from 4-7 pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

Named “The Picasso of Our Time” in the press, Malcolm Doran has been painting since his 6th grade teacher gave him a set of paints, and lists Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Cezanne and of course Picasso among the influences in his work. At 77 Malcolm still paints daily and shows no sign of slowing down. He resides in Sun City. Website:

The Kracke Fine Art Gallery, 36-101 Bob Hope Drive Suite F-2 in Rancho Mirage, features the work of another master artist, Don Kracke. Opening hours are Thursday-Sunday 2-8 pm, or by appointment at 760-992-0115. Website:

Wang’s Event Raises $1,400 for Charity

20 May, 2011

Last night Wang’s in the Desert and IncredibleArtist.Com gave $1,400 to two great charities: The AIDS Assistance Program and the Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

The money was raised during April’s fundraiser at Wang’s, where art sales, a silent auction, and a portion of Wang’s dinner sales all went to the charities.

Wang’s Manager Joel Herzer happily handed checks to Mark Anton (for AAP) and Tamara Hedges (for Friends), in the presence of Rick Pantele and Michael Marshall (for, Linda & Charles Perkins (for the artists), and the press.

The Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter will be putting the $700 they received towards the new Animal Shelter’s veterinary unit, which will help save many animal lives.

The event this past Tuesday was a great success! The Wang’s patio was transformed for the evening into a an art gallery featuring artwork from Malcolm Doran, Terry Hastings, Danny Hughes, Cid Newsome, the Perkins’ and K Stenlund.

The exhibition included many new photographs and artworks.

A feature of the evening was a silent auction: Each of the artists donated a small artwork, and 100% of the proceeds go to the charities. We also had donations from King Stairs Software and 1st Class Detailing.

During the event, Wang’s staff served delicious Asian appetizers and dim-sum, which convinced at least one group of visitors to stay for dinner!

The event was scheduled to end at 7pm, but with so many people enjoying the art, bidding on the auction items, and talking with the artists we kept the event open until almost 9pm.

The event was created to benefit two great local charities: The AIDS Assistance Program and The Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

Wow, that was a lot of fun last night. Thank you so much for all of your hard work. The artwork was beautiful! I love my new piece. I so enjoyed meeting all of the artists. What a treat! On behalf of the many orphaned animals in our shelter…thank you. — Tamara Hedges, Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter

Pumpkin Festival Photos

30 Oct 2010

The Pumpkin Carving Festival, hosted by IncredibleArtist.Com and Starbucks Coffee, was an immense success. Dozens of kids of all ages (and a few adults) came along to carve some truly amazing pumpkins. The event, part of the Starbucks “Make Your Mark” program, raised money for the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert.

Just before the event, hard-working Starbucks staff hollowed out all of the pumpkins.

The participants arrived, selected their pumpkins, and got to work carving their ideas. Artist Cid Newsome brought along pages of clever ideas for inspiration.

Artist Kandy Allen attended in a groovy far-out outfit and brought along a suitably macabre artwork.

Parents helped the younger kids with their carving, assisted by artists Kandy Allen, Bijan (with his helpful son Ian), and Malcolm Doran.

Some of the contestants had never carved pumpkins before, and one family from abroad was enjoying their first Halloween here.

As the sun set, candles were lit in each of the pumpkins, and judging began!

The event judges were: Betty Barker, Sherri Breyer, Louisa Castrodale, Tim Esser, Gloria Greer, Barbara Hochberg, Richard Kite (mayor of Rancho Mirage), Judi Miller, and Stacy Wiedmaier.

The pumpkins were divided into three categories: Happy/Funny, Scary, and Creative. The designs ranged from the traditional to the quite inventive. The judges had an incredibly difficult time scoring because of the high quality of the carved pumpkins.

Michael of totaled up the scores and awarded the prizes to the winners. CDMoD had gifts for all of the participants, and they also got to take their pumpkins home with them!

Award-winning filmmaker Joel Hochberg was on hand to film the event, and created a delightful short video, “PumpkinMania”:
